Overview

You enter a 3D world made of blocks, shared with other players online. The core loop is familiar from block games: gather resources, craft tools and items, and build with the blocks you collect. If you have played other block games, the basics will feel familiar within minutes; the differences are in the menus and in how busy the shared world is.

There are two ways to spend your time. In PvP you fight other players; in creative building you use the world to make whatever you want without the fighting. Poki lists the game under adventure, block, survival and 3D, as well as .io. Which mode you choose changes the whole feel: PvP is tense and competitive, creative building is closer to a shared sandbox.

Movement is WASD or the arrow keys, and Space jumps. A left click digs or attacks, a right click places a block. The rest sits on letter keys: X or U opens the inventory, G the main menu, M the respawn points, O the shop and I an in-game guide. Enter opens chat. There is also a shop on O. Take a moment to open each menu once so you know where things are before a fight starts.

Because the world is shared, what happens depends on who else is there. Plan for other players to be building, digging and fighting nearby, and use the respawn points menu to get back into the world after a defeat. The chat on Enter is open to everyone in the world, so it can help with coordination but also carries whatever other players decide to type.

Who will like it

Players who like block building and crafting, and those who want to test themselves against other people in PvP. A keyboard and mouse make the many controls easier than a touch screen. Anyone who wants a long, open-ended session will get more out of it than someone looking for a two-minute break.

• Poki is supported by advertising, so expect ads on its pages around the game.

• It is multiplayer with open chat, so you meet strangers and cannot control what they write. Younger players should play with an adult nearby.

• There are many keys to learn, which makes the first sessions slower than in simpler games.

Tips

• Open the in-game guide with I before your first long session. It is the quickest way to learn what the menus hold. It saves guessing later.

• Gather basic resources before you build anything large. Tools make every later step faster. Early resources pay off for the rest of the session.

• Learn the difference between left and right click early: one removes blocks, the other places them, and mixing them up undoes your own work.

• Check the respawn points menu (M) so you know where you will return after a lost fight.

• If you only want to build, choose creative building rather than PvP; other players can attack you in PvP. Creative building is the calmer way to learn the controls.
